They'd been doing this since they were teens, escaping the city and the crowded parties to the calm of the lake. Now, years later, with a daughter sleeping over at her grandparents' house, that little moment alone seemed even more precious.
Leo sighed, leaning back against the bench. The chilly air brought back memories of stolen kisses when no one was looking. He glanced at Finn, who still maintained the same paddling style, as if this lake were the only place where he truly breathed deeply.
"Funny," Leo said. "Before, we came here to dream about everything that hadn't happened yet. Now, we come here and realize everything we have. Are we getting old?" Leo chuckled softly and ran his thumb along Finn's jawline.
In the distance, the first fire burst into the sky, coloring the dark surface of the lake in red and gold. The reflections danced in their eyes, and Leo thought about how this tradition remained the truest way to celebrate new year.
Just the two of them, on the boat, under the stars.
