OnlyHams: How Will You Be Trick-or-Treating This Year?

This year, Helena wanted “spooky but glamorous,” so that’s what we’re doing. She’s nine now, which apparently means she has very strong opinions about costume aesthetics and zero patience for anything “basic.” Her wings are handmade, her glitter is intentional, and she’s already practiced her dramatic entrance three times.

I’m going full haunted vintage—black gown, rhinestones, feathered headpiece, the works. She said I look like “a ghost who used to be famous,” which honestly feels accurate. It’s not about being scary. It’s about being seen. Helena gets that.

We’re skipping the usual neighborhood loop. She picked a street with old houses and twisty trees, the kind that look like they belong in a story. She’ll be charging ahead, narrating everything, probably trying to trade candy for compliments. I’ll be trailing behind, trying not to trip over my dress and pretending I’m not completely charmed by the whole thing.

So no, I won’t be knocking on doors for sweets. I’ll be walking beside my little sister, dressed like a memory, collecting moments instead.

And that’s more than enough.
