A Coffee In The Morning

The birds sang in the morning. The heat was already gone, and the 9 degrees Celsius felt particularly noticeable. It rained in that way it only rains in London: constantly.

It was Aitana’s first day back at school after her travels. She walked calmly, alone, down the street. Some classmates passed by her, and Aitana pretended to greet them through the reflections projected on the shop windows along the way. The uniforms looked prettier on them. One day she would gather the courage to tell one of them, but for now, they passed by too quickly. Maybe her mother was right that she should be more athletic.

Near her school, there was another one. She also crossed paths with boys and girls her age who attended there. It was a school for rich kids, from good families and famous people. She watched one girl in particular from afar. She was very pretty and popular. She was always surrounded by friends and admirers, as she was huge on social media and a teen fashion icon. That morning, Aitana saw her again and decided to greet her when she was just a few meters away.

-Hi…

Heat flooded her from head to toe. The girl poured her cup of coffee over Aitana’s hair and walked away laughing. Aitana shrugged. The same thing had been happening for two years. She found comfort in the idea that the girl bought the drink just to do that, as if they were coffee friends.

A few hours later, Aitana returned home, dressed comfortably, and turned on her Nintendo Switch. She was the strongest fairy-type trainer in the world. Another day, with more energy, she would exercise.
