The smallest man I ever knew
He likes to flirt as if he were offering some kind of prize. He needs someone to feed his ego, which is the size of SoFi Stadium. He needs someone to admire him without thinking. He's in a hurry to call “love” anyone that makes him feel desired for three days. He needs someone idolizing him as if he were the personification of a god sculpted in gleaming white marble.
But not everything that glitters shines.
He believes that every look he receives is admiration, that every smile is an invitation, that every closeness is desire. He believes he's unforgettable. But what he doesn’t know is that impact isn't measured by the noise someone makes in your life, but by their ability to stay when silence begins. And he can't stand silence. If he doesn't get applause, he stops breathing. He can't stand without someone praising him. He thinks everyone who passes through his life leaves ruined with longing. He thinks when he enters a room he’s in slow motion.
It would be pathetic if it wasn't kinda cute. It's like watching a toddler learn to walk.
He truly believes the looks he receives are admiration, when most of the time it's just curiosity to know: Is he all that or is it just an act?
Spoiler: it's an act.
He's addicted to beginnings. He loves the initial enchantment, not the construction. When the mirror stops reflecting what pleases him, he breaks it and goes after another one that reflects the most desperate desire of his heart. Like the Mirror of Erised, that magic mirror from Harry Potter.
He thinks he is the main character of a story that he thinks is a bestseller recommended by the NY Times. But he doesn't realize that he's just a chapter. Not because this secondary character with a main character syndrome lacks beauty and charm, but because he lacks depth. He may be handsome with a good talk, but if he doesn't know how to stay, doesn't know how to love.
The smallest man I ever knew was the one who tried the hardest to appear enormous.
