That has always been my rule, even if I pretend it is not, because people love saying things like "if it didn't happen the first time, it wasn't meant for you."

Which, I think is nonsense. Nothing good in my life ever arrived on the first try. Not love, not confidence, not a ring on my finger, not a single dream I ever chased. The universe has horrible timing and even worse communication skills, so sometimes you have to knock twice. Sometimes you have to knock ten times and kick the door a little.

When I was younger I thought wishing once was enough. I would see something I wanted, whisper it into my pillow like a secret spell, and wait for the world to give it to me. Most of the time nothing happened, and I took it personally. I thought I had failed the wish. I thought maybe I wasn't special enough or brave enough or lucky enough. I thought maybe other girls were born with the kind of magic I would never touch.

But the older I got, the more I realized that the first wish is just the spark. And that is the moment you allow yourself to want something. The second wish is the commitment, that is the moment you decide you want it even after disappointment, even after fear, even after grabbing your own heart off the floor and dusting it off.

So now I wish twice.
Once when the idea first lights up my chest and scares me a little. And once again when everything goes wrong, because that is when the wish matters most. If something doesn't happen the first time, it doesn't mean it never will. It doesn't mean the door is locked. Sometimes the world is just slow. And the thing you want is taking the long road home.

If you want something, wish for it twice. And if the second wish doesn't work, then wish for it louder.
