They barely have time to find a rhythm with one baby before they have two, even though they left nothing up to fate this time. Avery had taken it upon herself to be careful, stocking their drawers with condoms the way a doomsday prepper might stock a bunker with canned beans. And if only those condoms hadn’t expired ten years ago, they might have been fine.
Or if only Arjan hadn’t gotten so good at following his therapist’s advice: it’s okay to let go a little, Arjan. You don’t have to control everything.
Maybe he should’ve.
Or maybe he doesn’t have to, because it’s not like he looks at Gael with an ounce of regret.
He’s been given Arjan’s middle name, and that alone feels like a blessing too big to hold. A son, so wildly unexpected it keeps Arjan awake some nights, not from stress, but from awe. The kind that sinks in slowly, in the quiet, when the kids are finally asleep.

He’s always wanted to be a father, and he’d spent a lifetime fearing he never would be. And it’s so beautiful to be scared for a whole new reason now. To wake up to make sure they both breathe. That they’re real.
And they are. The way their tiny fingers twitch and wrap around his own tells him that. That gentle pressure. Those impossibly big eyes that already seem to know him.
