So, it’s that time of year again, the calendar says it’s Janessa’s birthday, which means the world collectively stops spinning until she blows out candles, unwraps shiny things, and informs everyone she’s still younger than me (a lie, by the way, but I let it slide because love).
The band tried to throw her a classy surprise party. Emphasis on “tried.” Dan brought wine that smelled like it had already been drunk once, Cherry lit the birthday joint at the wrong end. Nessa played piano over her own “Happy Birthday” like some diva lounge act, and I was put in charge of balloons. Did you know helium tanks are harder to work than my drum kit? Yeah, me neither.
Now... there’s an elephant in the room. His name is Baby William. Our nephew. The kid’s got eyes like he already knows my internet history. I swear every time I walk in the room, he stares at me like he’s about to file a tax audit. You think drumming in front of 10,000 fans is nerve wracking? Try holding a rattle while Baby William side eyes you (just like his mother) and like a tiny mob boss. I’ll face any mosh pit, but not that toddler.
Anyway, tonight we’re celebrating the queen herself. I’ve promised Nessa I won’t set anything on fire this year (again, emphasis on try). She deserves the world, she’s my rockstar, my piano princess, my partner in crime. And yes, babe, I am writing this while wearing that ridiculous birthday hat you made me put on.
