09 Alone with my thoughts

The rain fell in heavy drops from an angry sky. Nick ignored the pouring rain as he slunk through the shadows of London. He had dug into the past of his family as far as he was able and yet every lead turned into a dead end. There was always a thread to be followed somewhere else but no coherent pattern that could be tied together to provide the proof he needed. It seemed most of the people in his family had a shadow life that no one ever talked about or could prove. Did his father work for MI-5/MI-6? Or was he simply an investment banker? His mother traveled to ‘hot’ spots around the world to highlight the need for humanitarian need … and yet things only seemed to get worse after she left those areas. Was it mere coincidence or did she have something to do with it? Both of his grandfathers served in the military. Old man Livingston had spent years as an anonymous civil servant (whatever that really means) while old Nick … could he really be one of the most wanted arms dealers in the world?

Nick shook his head; glad that the heavy rain kept the streets empty so he could be alone with his thoughts.
