i'm sorry, we're just different

It was Ursula K Leguin who said what goes too long unchanged destroys itself, and Gio had never understood what it meant until now.

She had been in the same situation for too long, unchanged, and now it had destroyed itself.

She should have done it sooner, packed her bags, and moved on after that first heartbreak. But she'd been too hurt, and too lonely, and too scared. So she had just stayed. Immovable, in the same spot. The same routines. Work, sleep, work, sleep. Her old dreams and visions slipping further and further away, and the loneliness growing bigger and bigger, even though she got more and more friends.

That's why her judgement had slipped—or she wanted to blame it on that at least. Why she had committed the worst of sins and gone to bed with her boss. She had, for lack of fancier words, shat where she was eating. For a moment she had tried to convince herself it wasn't the start of the royal destruction to come, but of course it was.

Casual. It only worked if you didn't see each other every single night. No matter how hard she tried to tell herself she could do it, she had never been cut from the casual cloth. So of course she had done the only thing she knew how to.

She had handed in her resignation, packed up the stuff in her flat, and started running.

Like the coward she was.
