To Maeve, On Your 8th Birthday

From the heart of your biggest fan, Dad!

Maeve my darling girl, today you turn eight. Eight whole years of magic and moments that have made my heart grow bigger than I ever thought it could. You are my redheaded wonder, my little poet, mom's backstage buddy (when will you cheer for me at one of my matches though? 🤭), my hug collector and, most importantly, my reason for smiling even on the hardest days.

I don't just love you, I freaking adore you. I adore you in the way the moon adores the tide. Always, no matter how far. I adore you in the way your tiny fingers once curled around mine and made me feel like the luckiest person alive. I adore you when you write your sparkly little notes that make me and your mom melt, when you ask impossible questions, when you play piano like you're summoning fairies and when you giggle so hard you snort.

You are the kind of person who makes the world better just by being in it. You remind me to slow down, to laugh when the groceries are forgotten and pizza saves the day, to dance in the kitchen and to see the beauty in every messy, magical moment. For eight whole years now, my heart's been living outside my body and it has red curls and a mischievous grin.
