meeting the prom date
The words that made her hesitant were: "Don't be mad, okay, Mom?" This was followed by their daughter being cagey about who her prom date was. Hali pulled her a few minutes before she said the boy was supposed to arrive at their house, her eyes showing fear - she hadn't seen that look in her eyes since the day that she had brought her home to Chicago.
Sailor couldn't think of why their daughter would say those words or why she couldn't tell who it was. She wasn't her father; she wouldn't threaten the existence of any man in her vicinity or threaten to push them into lakes. And she knew that she wouldn't somehow, years later, come up with some plan with the future husbands of her daughters to eliminate the ones that broke their hearts in the beginning.
No, she didn't have time to think about any of that as the family joined her at the door, one of her hands slipping into Aleksey's as she opened the door. The bouquet of dandelions and the gift basket of baked goods came into her sight next, and a smaller bag hanging on his arm took her attention first. Then her ocean eyes slid to his face, the glasses perched on his nose, a dazzling smile that she knew too well. The one that made all the women in her family fools.
"Everest," Sailor greeted him. Not so much the little boy he'd been during Christmas in Scotland so many years ago.
"It's EJ, Mrs. Morabito. These are for you," Everest—no, EJ—smiled another dazzling smile as he passed her the flowers before his dark eyes landed on Aleksey. “I heard that you have a sweet tooth. My best friend made these; they're good, " he said as he waited to be let into their home. Hali stood like a statue at her left, looking slightly unamused - that was possibly the only silver lining to be had.
