Auntie Luna
The bruises that once painted her body were finally fading. The deep purples had softened into pale yellows, and the soreness that had lingered was now just a dull memory. Among close friends, those who knew the battles she had fought, she felt comfortable enough to slip into a bikini, her scars visible but no longer a source of shame. But when it came to family, the weight of expectation and judgment was too much. She still chose the security of a jacket, hiding as much as she could under layers of fabric, even when the summer sun begged her to shed them.
The threats, however, continued to roll in. Daily messages filled with venom and intimidation, attempts to drag her back into the dark pit she’d escaped from. Yet, she didn’t care. Not anymore.
The bruises on her heart were healing too, though the process was slower. Freedom from him—that demanding, controlling man who had once dictated her every move—was a liberation she hadn’t thought possible. She was starting to believe that nothing could shake her anymore, that she had seen the worst and survived it.
But she had no idea what was coming next.
“I’m pregnant,” Camilla announced during their lunch. The table fell silent for a beat, and Luna’s eyes widened as the realization hit. Her brother’s girlfriend. Expecting. A new life growing—a new connection to her family that felt like a thread of sunlight weaving into her otherwise cloudy world.
Luna blinked, and then the joy burst out of her like a tidal wave. “I’m going to be an auntie!” she screamed, the words laced with disbelief and excitement. Her laughter bubbled up uncontrollably as she grabbed Camilla’s hand to study the grainy black & white image.
For the first time in what felt like forever, her heart swelled with a kind of happiness she had forgotten was possible.
