The edge of the ocean was a shade of a mirror. Undressed in hues only visible when they bow, and looked at it. Niele clung to Levi’s neck and he wore trails of her sunken nails like the last jewel he had to steal, in a meadow.
Ever adrift in the carnival of chance, he never knew which stray syllable might strike the flint; or which smoldering glance might turn the night to gold, spark the kick; which intense gaze would get them high, and navigating the untamed, her spine he loved how she curved, the blond curls splattered on the tumults of his chest.
They were ready, for the wild ones.
The wildest days presented with maps dotted in crimson and false names stitched on their passports.
Deciding to travel across the globe wasn't a spur-of-the-moment scheme; plans, they were the fruit of years dreaming together. To them, it wasn’t mere mischief; it was poetry. Call it their crooked justice: turning just a few gold bars and diamonds into a passport for art that refused to behave.
Their way of thanking the world for not catching them.
That moment captured was a threshold.
Stood poised, Niele; her hair kissed by salt and the promise of to-exist-nights, tangled in the taste of what’s to come. She won't behave.
Levi, shoulders bearing not just his own weight but the dizzying pull of being a lighthouse against all odds. He won't be-nice.
The water, touching them, attracted them deeply, then seemed to retreat reverently. Erased their footprints, as a way to thank them.
The sun, bowing out, cast them in quite the ember applause, for something that was just beginning.
Untraceable steps and white doors, they were no longer parents, spouses, or criminals:
they were commited,
lovers.
