She didn’t knock. Just stood there, hoodie up, eyes unreadable. Sapphira opened the door like she’d been expecting her all day. Maybe she had.
Diamond didn’t say much that first week. She didn’t unpack either. Her bag stayed zipped, shoved under the bed like a dare. She tested everything—curfews, rules, patience. Sapphira didn’t flinch. She didn’t chase, didn’t scold. Just stayed steady, like she knew storms pass if you don’t run from them.
There was a night Diamond came home late, scraped up and silent. Sapphira didn’t ask where she’d been. Just handed her a wet cloth and sat nearby, not touching, not talking. That was the first time Diamond didn’t pull away.
It’s not a fairy tale. It’s messy and loud and full of sharp edges. But something shifted. Slowly. Quietly. Diamond started leaving her shoes by the door. Started calling it “home” without realizing.
She’s not easy. But she’s here. And maybe that’s enough—for now.
