When she was a young little rebel (still is) and her overly critical parents were blaming her for something and telling her how much she sucked (only slightly paraphrasing here), she would often remind them, to their face, that she was only a product of their doing. They had made her what and who she was.
"I'll throw you a secret birthday party tonight, Zo. Aren't you happy?"
"Sure, sure, sure. If you'll excuse me, I have a bus to step in front of."
The anxiety of such an event like birthday is anything but a pleasant thing to look forward to. She couldn't care less and all she wanted was to be left alone during that time of year. If she was feeling 'cute,' she might take a few of her most emotionally distant, cold friends for a beer and a burger. She knew they wouldn't make any scenes and she could live with a nod of approval once every couple of years.
One night out wouldn't hurt, right?
