13 - lost in the dark water.
The air in Tromsø bit through her coat, crisp and clean like a promise she didn’t believe in. Déborah had come for work — meetings, contracts, the usual blur of efficiency — yet the invitation for a night dive beneath the northern lights stirred something reckless in her. She accepted, half for curiosity, half to remind herself she was still alive.
The sea was ink-black, the silence beneath it both beautiful and cruel. Then came the current — sudden, fierce — tearing her balance, slicing her leg against a hidden rock. The pain was blinding. Darkness pressed closer, and all she could do was surrender to it.
When she woke, the white light above her burned. The nurse spoke Norwegian too fast, too softly. “Name?” Déborah hesitated. Something in her, fragile and defiant, whispered a different one. She gave it — a fake name — as if it could shield her from the chaos waiting outside.
Meanwhile, Jackie’s world was unraveling. Thirty-seven missed calls. Dozens of unanswered messages. Déb, where are you? Please. Just tell me you’re okay.
When her phone went straight to voicemail, he caught the first flight to Tromsø, his hands shaking through every airport announcement.
He searched every hospital, every hotel. Nothing. Déborah didn’t exist.
And yet, in a quiet hospital room by the sea, she did — breathing, healing, hidden. Maybe it wasn’t an accident after all, but a pause. A moment she’d needed to disappear… just long enough to remember who she was before everyone needed her.
