High Fives Faith!

Faith, now that you’re five, I can finally tell you everything I’ve learned in my expert experience of being five for an entire few days already. Trust me, it’s a lot.

First thing: people expect you to write your name like you invented the alphabet. You don’t have to get it perfect. I still have days where my “A” looks like it’s trying to escape. That’s normal. As long as it looks like you wrote it, that counts.

Second: naps. This is the big one. When you’re four, naps sneak up on you. When you’re five, you can make deals. Don’t say “I’m not sleepy” or "I'm not tired," because that never works. Say “I'm busy" or "I’m thinking.” Grown-ups always think thinking is important.

Reading is another five-year-old superpower. Here’s the trick: look at the first letter and guess the rest. If you do it with a serious face, people nod like you’re doing something amazing.

One thing I have not been able to figure out yet, though, is what's up with Holly’s house? Cookies appear everywhere. Drawers, pockets, behind things, inside things. I don’t even know how. I found one inside a shoe today. I don’t even know whose shoe it was. Holly didn’t blink. She just said, “Bonus cookie,” like this is a normal thing in life.

Back to the topic, being five is great. You get to say “I can do it” even if you’re only 60% sure. People let you try anyway. And sometimes you actually nail it.

I’m really happy you’re five now. It feels good having you right here with me in the same number. And soon, Holly will catch up, and then the two of us can teach her everything we mastered: naps, writing our names, and the best part, knowing how to pick the biggest presents.
