Going back to Rio always stirred up memories. But it was home, and this is where he laid at rest. She always visited when she was home, even though a piece of him lived in her heart forever.
Taking a seat by his grave, she remembered.
The happiest day of her life. What he said when he surprised her, lowering to one knee slowly and pulling a diamond out of his pocket, “I made sure it was a big fucking rock. Today, right here... will you marry me, Beth?”
The look on his face when she walked down the aisle to him, the way the tears cascaded down her face as walked to him. The wide grin he gave her when he saw her for the first time. The first words he uttered, as he wiped away her happy tears, “You look…. Wow.”
His vows, “… You are my partner, my light, my smiles, my joy. You provide an anchor in my life and at the same time, you set me free to explore. I want nothing more than to share the rest of my life with you.”
The way he scooped her up in his arms and carried her down the aisle, much to her delight.
The song he twirled her around on the dance floor, the lyrics spoke to them both, and their love story.
Beth couldn’t hide the grin spreading across her face, the involuntary tears spilling onto her cheeks as she remembered all the times they laughed, had fun or shared the stage. He was the love of her life.
She also remembered the last day she’d seen him. The last words that they shared. How, in just a few days the police would be at the door. Their words forever on repeat in her brain, “Unfortunately, due to the severity of the accident, they did not survive.”
She wiped her tears with the back of her hand and pressed her lips to the gravestone kissing it before departing, murmuring softly, ”I’ll make you proud Cowboy, just wait and see. One. Four. Three.”
