he was used to doing his own thing. while his mom brought her work to the park to do, he was let loose to do his own thing, as long as he stayed in her sight. he was getting older by now and his urges to play on the actual playsets were getting fewer and further in between. now he liked to collect rocks or look for bugs to catch. slides didn't amuse him anymore.

the boy swung on the swing just a little, swaying more than he was swinging. with his dark and inquisitive eyes, he studied the other kids. his social anxiety made it difficult for him to approach them. he was afraid of being teased. the kids at school weren't very nice to kids who were different and his teachers were always telling his mother that he was.. eccentric. he didn't even know what that meant but he had googled it and he didn't think that it described him.

it was embarrassing that his mother was a teacher at the same school where he went. it felt like he always had an eye on him, like she wasn't going to let him out of her sight. he had never understood why she was like that, he had never known why he couldn't stay with his dad sometimes, too. even though they weren't together anymore, his mother didn't seem to hate Sage's dad and Sage sometimes got to talk to him on facetime, but he was so incredibly busy all of the time - Sage just didn't know how to connect with him.

the boy breathed a heavy sigh and looked down at his feet as they trailed back and forth over the worn down ground in front of him. there was that crushing weight of loneliness, but he just never knew what to do with it. sometimes, he thought he preferred to be alone because nobody understood him and they always made fun of him.

but other times, Sage just wanted a friend who got him.
