A Day Full of Magic

Hazel didn’t understand what was so special about today, but everyone was smiling. Big smiles. Warm, happy smiles. She liked that.

She woke up to Mama’s soft voice and Papa’s strong arms lifting her. He smelled nice, like soap and something familiar—something safe. She snuggled into his chest, still sleepy, but then she saw something new. The room looked different. There were colorful ribbons hanging from the walls, and round, floating things—balloons—swayed when she reached for them. She giggled as one brushed against her tiny fingers.

The day was full of exciting things. More people than usual. More hugs. More kisses. More hands ruffling her hair. There was a big, soft chair just for her, and when she sat in it, everyone clapped. She clapped, too, because clapping was fun.

Then, there was cake. A big one. Bigger than her hands. Mama and Papa put a tiny, glowing stick on top and told her to blow. She didn’t know how, but she tried, and when the light went out, everyone cheered! That made her giggle, so she smacked her hands into the cake. It was soft, squishy, and oh—sweet! She smushed more of it between her fingers and onto her face, making everyone laugh.

She liked this day. It was full of laughter, hugs, and yummy things. She didn’t know what a birthday was, but if it meant this much happiness, she wanted so many more.

And before she closed her sleepy eyes that night, safe in Papa’s arms, she knew one thing for sure—she was loved.
