The Woman I Wanna Be | #LasEastham

I’m already fifteen, and in the very near future, many changes will unfold in my life. Some will see me and not recognize me, even though they’ve walked this long path with me from the beginning—toward becoming, legally, an adult woman. Others will discover me and hear stories from the past as we write new ones together in the present. But in truth, how others react isn’t what matters most.

I look in the mirror and ask myself: What kind of woman will I be? What kind of woman do I want to be?

As an Eastham, I was raised to believe that absolutely everything is within my reach, and that it all depends on me. Life has shown me that it’s not always that simple. But… isn’t my personality mine to shape?

I look in the mirror and tell myself: I want to be me. I want to learn to be sexy when I feel like it, and modest when I don’t. To learn how to fall in love and how to walk away, how to trust—and never forget that when nothing else remains, family does. I want to believe in true love: the pure kind, the traditional kind, the fairy tale kind—but without forgetting that princes don’t exist, and that kissing frogs won’t turn them into something they’re not.

It’s close now. And I’m ready.
